The Poseidon Adventure
MOVIES!, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
One of the most-remembered, and best, of the epic, all-star disaster movies made during the 1970s, this 1972 film from producer Irwin Allen features one of the most “all-star” of those casts, with an ensemble comprised of five Oscar winners: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons. Unlike some of those other movies, The Poseidon Adventure works and is a lot of fun in spite of (or maybe because of?) its kind of silly premise: A New Year’s Eve party aboard a luxury ocean liner is literally turned upside down when a tsunami capsizes the ship. Led by a determined preacher (Hackman), a small group of survivors attempts to escape by making their way up to the bottom of the boat, hoping that it hasn’t been completely submerged. A popular blockbuster in its time, the film was nominated for eight Oscars (including Best Supporting Actress for Winters) and won for Best Original Song (“The Morning After” by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn). The impressive visual effects by L.B. Abbott and A.D. Flowers were honored with a Special Achievement Award by the Academy.

Catch a Classic!
Legendary actress Goldie Hawn will turn 79 later this month (she was born Nov. 21, 1945). Hawn and William Atherton play a husband and wife who take a police officer (Michael Sacks) hostage and race across Texas to get to their child before he is placed in foster care. This film is a comedic neo-noir with Hawn as a recently divorced librarian who gets embroiled in a mystery when a stranger gives her a hidden roll of film for safekeeping. TCM Birthday Tribute: Dick Powell
TCM, beginning at 6:30am
Catch a Classic!
Richard Ewing Powell — better known as actor Dick Powell, one of the famous names from Hollywood’s golden age — was born 120 years ago today (he was born Nov. 14, 1904, in Mountain View, Arkansas; he died from cancer in Los Angeles on Jan. 2, 1963, at age 58). To celebrate the iconic star, TCM is showing eight of his films this morning and afternoon. While Powell may be most remembered for the dramas and films noir he made later in his career, today’s lineup focuses heavily on the musicals and comedies in which he appeared early on. The first six titles fall into one or both genres: Going Places (1938), costarring Anita Louise; Hard to Get (1938), also featuring Olivia de Havilland; Hollywood Hotel (1937), directed by Busby Berkeley and costarring Rosemary Lane; Naughty but Nice (1939), also with Ann Sheridan, Gale Page and Ronald Reagan; Cowboy From Brooklyn (1938), with Pat O’Brien and Priscilla Lane; and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), directed by Mervyn LeRoy, featuring choreography by Berkeley and also starring Warren William and Joan Blondell. Of course, a Dick Powell celebration has to include at least one film noir, and we get one today with the next movie, 1948’s Pitfall, which also features Lizabeth Scott, Jane Wyatt and Raymond Burr. The concluding film takes us back to the musical genre: The Singing Marine (1937), featuring a couple of Berkeley-directed musical sequences.
